I was born in Bath and went to school there. After university, I trained as a solicitor and lived in Stoke Newington. My travels included a trip to Poland with the Cambridge Esperanto Group in 1981, a spell volunteering with IVS in Swaziland in 1983, and two workcamps in 1980, one working with Buddhist monks on the Peace Pagoda in Milton Keynes and the other restoring the village church in Charols, in France.
I worked as a housing lawyer in local government until 1998, when I decided to write full time. My first novel, Children of the Shaman was published by Orbit Books in 2001; The Glass Mountain followed in 2002. Roc, a division of Penguin Puttnam, published Children of the Shaman in the States.
Small press Kristell Ink have brought out a new edition of Children of the Shaman with cover art by Daniele Serra and internal illustrations by Evelinn Enoksen. I am delighted that they are bringing out my other books, The Glass Mountain and Malarat, together with my latest novel, Winterbloom.
