Small Group Sessions

October 5th, 2018 · 1 Comment

As always at Bristolcon we will be running some small group sessions throughout the day. These can be focused on particular areas of writing technique, or just a chance to enjoy a chat with a favourite author. This year we also have an art workshop for the first time! You can sign up in advance by emailing programme (at) and letting us know what sessions you’d like to attend. We like to leave spaces open for people to sign up on the day, so the prebookings will be limited to seven people per session (four for the art session – Silk Painting), and two sessions per person. After that, it’ll be first come, first served on the 27th – sign up forms will be at the committee desk. See you there!

Current sign-ups: Small Group Sessions 2018

This year’s workshops are:

Networking for Introverts with Vicky Brewster (10:00)
As promoting books (and authors) falls so much more heavily now on the individual, Vicky discuss some strategies for networking and getting the most out of a con — or any social situation — when you’re an introvert, including discussing the difference between introversion and shyness or anxiety; going through some conversation starters; self confidence tips; active listening and having meaningful conversations.

Making Every Word Count with Juliet McKenna (11:00)
How to use detail effectively in your fiction

Jasper Fforde (12:00)
Advice on any issues around writing, motivation, structure, adding ‘sparkle’ or writing series books, dealing with publishers/editors/publicity.

Sarah Ash (12:00)

‘Happy Halloween – some spooky recommendations in anime and manga from Zoe and Sarah!’

(Monsters, vampires and all things scary viewed from a Japanese perspective.)

Joanne Hall’s Secrets Of The Slushpile (13:00)
Jo is the acquisitions editor at a small press (and one of our Guests of Honour!), and in this discussion she’ll tell you some of the ways to help your manuscript escape the dreaded slush pile. You’ll be talking about presentation, cover letters, the dread synopsis, submission guidelines and how to make your manuscript shine!

Kaffeklatsch with Gareth L Powell (15:00)
Gareth will be especially happy for aspiring authors to come along and ask any questions they may have about the craft and business of writing, or you can just kick back and have a conversation

Silk Painting with Sophie E Tallis (15:00 in the Art Room)
A practical workshop on the art of silk painting

Emma Newman (16:00)
Are you struggling to write the first draft of your novel? Are you researching endlessly but not actually writing the book? Have you had a book in your head for years but been unable to start it? Do you have a drawer full of unfinished stories and manuscripts? Emma will help you out.

The A-Z of self publishing with Rexx Deane (17:00)
Discussion on hiring editors, whether you need to buy ISBNs (and how), how to format your book, which companies are available to print, and how to set up distribution, covering all the things Rexx found difficult to find out when he started on his self-publishing journey.

Kaffeklatsch with Andrew Skilleter (18:00)
Meet the artist behind many great Doctor Who covers and much more!

Write your name in Gallifreyan with Andy Bigwood (17:00)

Andy will teach you enough Gallifreyan for you to be able to write your name
