IMPORTANT ANNOUCEMENT FROM BRISTOLCON COMMITTEE

June 23rd, 2020< by Rosie Oliver --> · Comments Off on IMPORTANT ANNOUCEMENT FROM BRISTOLCON COMMITTEE

We have been monitoring the developing Covid-19 situation closely. In particular we have been following the advice from Public Health England (PHE) and the government, and how that will impact our planning and our members. Our primary concern is ensuring the health and wellbeing of our members and all involved, and even with a relaxation in restrictions it would not be possible for us to offer the convention that you know and love.

Regrettably, we have now had to take the difficult decision to postpone BristolCon this year.

The good news is that we have formally moved the event to Saturday October 30th 2021 at same place, the Hilton DoubleTree Hotel, Bristol. We would like to thank the hotel for their help and support in this. Further good news is that Anna Smith Spark and Adrian Tchaikovsky have both kindly agreed to be our Guests of Honour for this later date.

We will be in touch with all of our members regarding membership options. As you can appreciate, we are working hard behind the scenes to make everything go as smoothly as possible for everyone, so please be patient with us while we sort things out.

For those who have already booked rooms at the hotel for 2020, please contact the hotel directly. Click here for their statement on Coronavirus and Bookings Terms and Conditions. Please note that their current deadline for hotel room changes is 31stAugust 2020.

Panel suggestions for the 2020 BristolCon will automatically be carried over to the 2021 event. Please do not stop sending them in. We would love hear your wonderful ideas.

To sum up, we’re still here, working to provide a fabulous BristolCon in October 2021. We look forward to seeing you there.

Well done to everyone for getting nominated for the awards. We were especially lucky in the southwest to have three out of the five shortlisted novels – Gareth L Powell with Fleet of Knives, Emma Newman with Atlas Alone and Juliet McKenna with The Green Man’s Foe. The non-southwester shortlisted novel was Tade Thompson with The Rosewater Insurrection.

Bristol in Infinite Detail: Tim Maughan in Conversation at Foyles

March 9th, 2020< by Rosie Oliver --> · Comments Off on Bristol in Infinite Detail: Tim Maughan in Conversation at Foyles

This event is no longer taking place as Tim Maughan is no longer coming over from Canada – Foyles hope to rearrange this event for another time.

Foyles, Cabot Circus, Bristol, have been lucky enough to snag ex-local Bristolian Tim Maughan all the way from Canada for a discussion of his riveting and whip-smart novel, INFINITE DETAIL. Date: Wednesday 8th April 7-30pm to 9-00pm. Cost: £3.

INFINITE DETAIL: Imagine a world without the Internet. No Facebook, no Google and no Wikipedia. An end to automation and algorithms. No more global supply chains or instant communication. Do you see a terrifying Dystopia or sublime Utopia? Set in a future just around the corner, a Bristol both familiar and strange, Infinite Detail is a bold novel that asks big questions about what connectivity really means, how much we rely on technology and why a future not mediated by Big Data is worth imagining.

Tickets are available from the Foyles website here or can be bought directly from Foyles Cabot Circus, SU21, Bridgstowe Street, BS1 3BH.
